Treat yourself as you would others.

All things considered, do you tend to think of yourself as a kind person?

I think most of us would probably see ourselves in this way.

But even the kindest person can sometimes behave in a very unkind way to someone in their life.

That person?


We sympathise with others, yet criticise ourselves.

We’re patient with others, impatient with ourselves.

Tolerant of others, unforgiving of ourselves.

So if you find yourself treating yourself unkindly today, please stop.

It’s not unreasonable to be kind to yourself, it really isn’t.

It’s only fair.

  1. I was reading a novel where the main character, a doctor, was walking the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compestella. He met various people along the way including one woman who reflected, on being diagnosed with cancer, that she needed to change her relationship to herself.

    She started asking herself a question when making decisions or facing impulses: “If I loved myself, what would I do?”.

    Somehow, posing it as a question, seems to make it easier to press the pause button on the habitual drive towards unkind unhelpful responses.
