What makes you shine?

I love this question. Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan is asking her sold-out audiences this as she tours around North America this summer.

She speaks of the importance of shining on through adversity, even appreciating the hard times that life brings us because they can transform us into the strong, beautiful beings we were meant to be. Her songs are filled with inspiration to appreciate life’s struggles, then learn from them and let them go. And always keep on shining.

When I ask myself what makes me shine, what makes my heart sing, I get words coming up like:

– dancing
– helping people thrive
– snuggling with my daughters
– making a really delicious meal to share with someone special
– writing
– building communities

I’d love to hear about what makes you shine, what makes your heart sing?

As inspiration to share and shine unabashedly, one of my favorite quotes ever is by author Marianne Williamson:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’
Actually, who are you not to be?
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

So why not go out there and be amazing today, in whatever way you like? And please do let us know…

What makes you shine?

  1. What makes me shine, is the joy I feel everyday when I kiss and hug my two beautiful girls & wish them a happy day in learning, being kind, & to keep smiling, and then when I pick them up again and am smothered in their love….I shine when I go for a run, I shine when I visit my 92 year old lady every fortnight, she always has a kind word and smile, & an interesting story. I shine when I see my parents who live about 2k away from Me…..I shine everyday I walk out the door, life is for living, and I love living it!!!

  2. Sentiments well expressed, for me also very much echo helping people thrive; in addition: teaching and learning, seeing our crops prosper and meet appreciative demand, working with our two Shire horses, training and learning with them to do traditional farm tasks, sharing doing nothing much with my good lady.

  3. Helping others, developing genuine connections with people. Being in nature, meditation, prayer, god. Exercise. Over coming hum drum mediocrity and pushing through challenges.

  4. I am a painter and when I paint or get to discuss my paintings and technique with someone with the know-how I shine and so do they (-_-) I also love walking and dancing and singing they can be shiny occupations, and also occasionally dressing up, that can be shiny too, to feel special for a night or two.

got my cards yesterday, thanks so much, currently they are also making me shine (-_-)

  5. Being creative, connecting with others, laughing and dancing with my kids, going out with my husband, seeing new places, connecting with women and marvelling at life and nature!

  6. Being able to encourage people to do the One Minute Smilence – which simple means take time out each day, to focus on things that they you are grateful for, and then spend a minute smiling as you recall things that make you smile.

I also just love the magic moments I have with family and friends.

  7. Seeing my children happy.
    Nature in all its glory.
Sentiments expressed that please and surprise me.
    Acknowledgment of effort made.
    Music, especially serene music.
Creating a painting or a piece of craft work that turns out well.
Hearing laughter when I say something funny .
Children’s honesty and true words: they are often so apt!

  8. What a beautiful post, and replies too. The sun that is within and the sun around me make me shine. I am speechless when it comes to describing the feeling that seeing nature’s abundance gives me. I just want to hug the whole world, the trees, flowers, grass, the lakes. I love smiles, saying hello to a stranger. I love life so much. And most of all love love.
